Mathematics is a tool for everyday life. It is a whole network of concepts and relationships which provide a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems. It also provides the materials and means for creating new imaginative worlds to explore.
At St catherine's we teach mathematics using the new Renewed Framework for mathematics. This encompasses 7 strands of learning:
- Using and Applying Mathematics
- Counting and understanding Number
- Knowing and Using number Facts
- Calculations
- Understanding Shape
- Measuring
- Data Handling
Content in each unit draws on at least 3 of the 7 mathematics strands, and always includes using and applying mathematics. There is a strong focus on speaking and listening to encourage our children to discuss their findings and explain their reasoning. Each unit of the Framework is taught over a 2 or 3 week period. The use of practical activities, IWB games and interactive teaching programmes are all a vital part of our lessons, in order to engage all our children and their learning styles. “ The pupils in this school benefit tremondously from the wealth and quality of learning opportunities offered to them.” Ofsted
